★ Most sources seem to think Daniel D. Tompkins' middle initial stood for nothing and was added during his school years to differentiate him from another student. Other sources claim it stands for Decius.

★ Some sources say Monroe received 76,592 votes for president, 68.2% of the total. However, national popular vote totals in 1812 were not necessarily indicative of the will of the people. In nine states the legislature decided who was awarded their electoral votes. Ten other states let the people choose, and not every candidate was running in every state. Even then there were significant restrictions on who was allowed to cast a ballot.

★ A weakened Federalist Party didn't formally nominate a candidate but those remaining rallied behind Rufus King. He took three states, and without official guidance each voted for different vice-presidential candidates. Massachusetts' 22 electors voted for John Eager Howard. Delaware gave their three votes to Robert Goodloe Harper. And Connecticut split their nine votes, giving James Ross five and John Marshall four.

One Delaware elector did not vote. Maryland once again split their electoral votes, with the Federalists earning three of the eleven electors. When it came time to vote, two of them abstained and the third didn't show up. All four votes should have gone to Rufus King.

In early elections, the states used several different methods to choose electors. In some, the state legislature picked the electors. In others, the people chose the electors directly (via a winner-take-all statewide at-large vote, a system where voters in districts chose individual electors, or a combination of the two).

State-by-state popular vote data is not available for early elections due to a lack of reliable and uniform data. Most historians use 1824 as the starting date for those numbers because of, what a Congressional Quarterly publication calls, the "availability, accessibility, and quality" of the returns since then..
